World number one Scottie Scheffler whose opening round of 67 leaves him five behind the leader Xander Schauffele: "There's nothing Ican do. Xander went out and played a great round thismorning and I'm not really going to worry about trying toshoot nine under. I'm just going to go out and try to hit goodshots and play my own game.

"I'd like to clean up a few ofthe mistakes. I missed two putts I felt like I should haveholed today, but that's going to happen when the greensget a little chewed up.

    "Overall today was asolid round."

On starting his tournament with an eagle from 167 yards: "It was a stock nine-iron. I was tryingto hit it right at the pin because I felt like if I hit it the rightway, the shortest it was going to go was on the pin. I feltlike it was going to go a little past the pin if anything, and itwas nice to see that one go in, obviously."

Thirty three of the past 34 US PGA Championshipwinners have been within six shots of the lead after day one.

Now nobody has shot nine under before on the first day, but evengiven that, there are still 30 players in the mix from three under upwards.

Within that group, there are seven majorchampions, including the three most-fancied coming into the week.

This tournament is far from over.

The 2020 US PGA champion Collin Morikawa after his round of 66: "A lot of low scores.Obviously I was watching the coverage [earlier], and youwant to get off to a good start, especially how everyone isplaying, and I was two over through five.

"[But] everything has felt good leading up.Just kind of continue to give yourself chances. I was able tohit a few close, make some putts and just used thatthroughout the rest of the day.

"It's nice to watch in the morning and just get afeel for how things are going and obviously knowing that you need to post something low if you'regoing to stay on pace.

"There are a lot of birdie opportunities, butthis course is still on the long side for me so I still have tohit some good shots and some quality shots, and wewere able to do that."

Brooks Koepka just flicks on a switch at the majors and becomesall business in the two or three weeks leading up to it.

I heard he wasn’t happy about how he played at the Masters so hewent into work mode. He’s been in the gym every day and every night, workinghard on the range and he’s a very talented golfer. Sometimes you just have toput in those little extra hours to get that intensity and work ethic.

    That’s what he does.

He doesn’t seem to get himself up for regular events but when itcomes to the majors, he’s all business.

While McIlroy and MacIntyre led the charge from our side ofthe pond, other Brits are in the mix.

England’s Aaron Rai had a nice run and finished at threeunder while Matt Fitzpatrick closed strongly to card a two-under 69.

Compatriots Luke Donald, Matt Wallace and Justin Rose are all justinside the red two shots further back.

Tyrrell Hatton (E), Jordan Smith (E) and Tommy Fleetwood (+1)have a bit of work to do after round one.

Rory McIlroy and Bob MacIntyre could not be separated after dayone as both shot fine rounds of 66.

The former was happy with his score and described his playas “scrappy” while the latter just said how “happy” he was after heading home to Scotland recently and bringing his mum to Kentucky with her cooking for him this week.

Whatever he’s feasting on seems to be working given this was Bob's bestround at a major.

With today’s stunning round, Xander Schauffele became thefirst player to shoot 62 at the US PGA Championship and the only person to havemultiple rounds of 62 at a major.

It all points to a man on a mission as he chases his firstmajor title.

The caveat? In 2023 when he shot 62 at the opening round ofthe US Open he faded over the weekend and finished tied for 10th.

He’s picked up an unfortunate knack of finishing tournaments running ice cold.

  11. Par finish for Scottiepublished at 00:43 17 May

    00:43 17 May

    Scheffler -4 (67), Clark E (71), Harman +1 (72)

A scruffy putt to finish for Scottie Scheffler. His ball wanders right straight off the bat and he'll have to settle for a par finish.

Wyndham Clark's effort from the opposite side of the hole is also wayward and he lets out a naughty word in frustration.

And finally, here's Open champ Brian Harman to finish up. A five-footer for par... nope. He'll be annoyed with that because it sees him slip over par.

  12. Postpublished at 00:39 17 May

    00:39 17 May

    Scheffler -4, Clark E (17)

Wyndham Clark's second to the last crept into the first cut of rough so he's out with a wedge, but his stabby effort has zero control and his ball sidles a good 10 feet beyond the cup.

Scottie Scheffler has already played up with his third, hitting a high floaty number that finishes 15 feet past the hole. Matt Fitzpatrick holed a birdie putt from similar range a short while ago. Can Scottie somehow get to five under despite not appearing to have his A game today?

    Harman E (17)

We haven't seen much of Open champion Brian Harman today. But here is the left-hander, firing at the flag on the last with this third shot from around 120 yards. The American gets a little too much action on his ball though and it goes from looking like it might finish six feet away, to slipping down a slope to leave him a 40-footer.

  14. Postpublished at 00:34 17 May

    00:34 17 May

    Scheffler -4 (17)

Scottie Scheffler has just 249 yards left on the 18th after hitting his drive 311 yards. But that's another shocker of a shot from the world's best player.

It's another mis-hit and his ball plunges out of sight into thick rough about 30 yards short of the green. And he's got a cavernous bunker between his ball and the raised green.

His only saviour is that it's a par-five finisher. Wyndham Clark shows Scheffler how to do it, pinging his second over the flag and on to the back edge of the green.

  15. Rahm finishes in the redpublished at 00:28 17 May

    00:28 17 May

    Fowler +1 (72), Rahm -1 (70), Young -2 (69)

Huge kudos to Jon Rahm who has been way below his best at times today.

He's attacked the back nine and got his just rewards, clipping from the fringe of the green to four feet for birdie at 18. And he's holed it. He has clawed a round under par and that is no mean feat for someone who was four over through six holes.

    Eight shots back... could he?!

Playing partner Cam Young finishes with a flourish too, he's nabbed a closing birdie.

Frustration though for Rickie Fowler as nine straight pars leave him one over for the day.

  16. 'Did a good job going after it'published at 00:25 17 May

    Kim -5 (66)

Tom Kim after shooting a five-under 66: "Just playing in the afternoon with apacked field, the greens just get beat up. That's one of the advantages that the morning has with softgreens, especially when they're rolling really good. I don't know if it was windy in the morning but obviouslyreally low scores. When you've got soft greens, guys justtear it up and it just happens.

"When you see a nine under par in a majorchampionship, you know it's out there. You know it'sdefinitely gettable. Obviously Xander [Schauffele] played really, reallywell but when you see a score like that, you go, OK, there's going to be a lot ofopportunities out there.

"I think the guys who did shootunder par in the afternoon did a really good job of goingafter it."

  17. Bogey for Clark as Scheffler scrambles parpublished at 00:24 17 May

    00:24 17 May

    Scheffler -4, Clark E(17)

Back to Scottie Scheffler on the 17th and the world number one's scrambling skills are good. His chip up leaves him a four-footer and this time he drains it. Good par in the end.

Wyndham Clark is dropping though. And he's back to level par.

  18. Double trouble for Philpublished at 00:23 17 May

    00:23 17 May

    Morikawa -5 (66), Mickleson +3 (74), Fitzpatrick -2 (69)

Another player having a scruffy finish is Phil Mickelson. His fourth to the par-five last airmails the green into more thick stuff and he thrashes his ball out of there but it catches a slope that takes his ball away from the flag. Here's his sixth, from 35 feet. And that's not in. A double bogey to finish.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who found the green in three, has been waiting patiently for his 15-foot birdie putt but rattles it in with no dramas. Solid from the Englishman.

And here's Collin Morikawa tapping in for a birdie after a shoving his eagle putt to within a couple of feet.

  19. Postpublished at 00:18 17 May

    00:18 17 May

    Scheffler -4 (17)

Scottie Scheffler is having a bit of a scruffy finish to his round. He's a touch wayward off the tee on 17 and finds a fairway bunker. He can't reach the green in two from there, his ball pulling up 10 yards short of the green. Another testy chip and putt to come.

  20. Postpublished at 00:18 17 May

    00:18 17 May

    Rahm E (17)

Can Jon Rahm end a tumultuous day one under par?

The par-five 18th Photo Finish stands in his way and he's off to the perfect start, flushing his drive 324 yards down the middle of the fairway.
