Right, well, it's been eventful alright! Xander Schauffele can rightly celebrate his first major after a brilliant performance all week at the US PGA Championship at Valhalla.

In a heavyweight contest near the home of Muhammad Ali, Schauffele survived all the big punches that came his way to deliver the knockout blow on the very last hole.

After struggling to close out tournaments, Schauffele had to sleep on the lead all week, and playing in that final group on that final hole knowing exactly what he needed to do is just the toughest task you can imagine in the circ*mstances.

And with that, we'll sign off but remind you that we'll be back to do it all again at Pinehurst next month for the US Open. Make sure you join us then.

More from the 2024 US PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele: "I am very satisfied. I'm tired.Once I sat down in scoring, I felt a little bit more tired. Butjust a whirlwind of emotions.I knew I had to birdie the last hole, looking up at the board.

"I was trying to squeak a birdie in there somehow just tohave some kind of cushion. It was a hectic birdie, as well, but it was awesome. I kept telling myself, I need to earnthis, I need to prove this to myself, and this is my time.

"I stayed very patient. I waslooking up at the board. There's been times where I triedto look away from it until the back nine, but today I waslooking at it.I just wanted to be aware of everything. I wanted to knowexactly where I stood. I wanted to know and address myfeelings when they were happening."

Bryson DeChambeau speaking after finishing as runner-up in the US PGA Championship: "I thought it might be enough.

"18 is not necessarily a birdiehole that you can birdie easily, you can get a weird lie in the bunker or inthe rough and weird stuff can happen.

"But we did what we needed to do and I didn’ttake care of it earlier in the week. I played well today but made a couple ofmistakes early on.

"I’m happy with it, but I want to win."

The 2024 US PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele speaking at the trophy presentation: "I was kind of emotional after the putt lipped in. It's been a while since I've won and I kept saying all week I needed to stay in my lane. Man was it hard to do that today. I tried all day to keep focussed on what I needed to do and keep every hole ahead of me.

"I think I would have been a bit less patient if that putt had not have gone in. I really did not want to go into a play-off against Bryson. I am assuming we'd have played 18 and it would have been a lot of work. I told myself 'this was my opportunity, just capture it.'"

"My mum is in San Diego and my dad is in Hawaii and I managed to call him but I had to hang up quickly because he was making me cry. He was on the phone bawling. It means so much."

    Schauffele -21 (65)

With that birdie on the last, Xander Schauffele broke the record for the best score to par in men's major championship history at -21.

Schauffele's victory means the last nine US PGA Championships have been won by an American.

The 30-year-old is also the third winner of the Wanamaker Trophy to do so by making a birdie on the 72nd hole to win by one stroke.

The other two were Phil Mickelson in 2005 and Payne Stewart in 1989.

The total purse for the 2024 PGA Championship is a whopping $18.5m which equates to £15.8m.

Of that the winner will collect £2.85m and 10th place is worth just under £400,000. Not bad eh.

Over the last 20 years, the only players to lead or have a share of the lead in all four rounds of their first career major victory are Jimmy Walker at the 2016 PGA Championship, Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters, Rory McIlroy at the 2011 US Open and Trevor Immelman at the 2008 Masters.

You can now add Xander Schauffele to that list.

Just near the home of the Kentucky Derby it was apt that the US PGA Championship became a cavalry charge with all of the form horses in the golf world jockeying for position throughout this thoroughbred of a major.

Xander Schauffele came out of the gate like a sprinter, but proved that he could stay the distance and eventually won by a nose.

Right that's enough horse racing puns - Schauffele is about to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.

While the engraver makes sure he's spelling Xander Schauffele correctly, our champion is just signing his scorecard and just letting it all sink in that he's finally a major champion.

He had to fend off some top-quality challengers as well with Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland coming for him today after Shane Lowry and Justin Rose had gone low on Saturday.

But after that spectacular start Schauffele has paced it perfectly, stepping on the gas early today then always responding to every challenge thrown at him.

    That's a richly deserved victory.

Experience is something that has brought him to this win.

He has shot 62 before in the first round of a major and didn't get it done. Then last week playing against Rory McIlroy at Quail Hollow and not getting it done.

He has taken something from those experiences and got it done this time - 21 under par at Valhalla.

The huge crowd surround the 18th green go wild and the likes of Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry are up there ready to offer their congratulations to Xander Schauffele on his first major triumph.

And what a win, that putt at the end almost didn't drop you know, but that would have been harsh on the man who has lad from day one after that brilliant 62 on Thursday.

And what better way for a player who had doubts about his closing ability than to win the US PGA Championship with a wire-to-wire victory.

It's there! It's tracking, tracking, curling away to the left but just catches enough of the hole to do a slight horseshoe and drop into the cup to mean Xander Schauffele is a major champion for the first time.

This is great stuff isn't it! It really doesn't matter one bit what the score is, final hole of a major, final pairing coming down the last with Xander Schauffele needing to get up and down to win the US PGA Championship.

Nothing to do with money, everything to do with history, legacy, and whether he can handle the pressure.

Great shot! That's so tough, the ball way above his feet, gripping down on a four iron, the connection from Xander Schauffele was sublime and although it was never going to have the distance he's come up just short and has plenty of green to work with.
