The letter p is an easy letter to learn because the uppercase and lowercase letters are very similar. Once you’ve finished the uppercase letter P craft you might want to go ahead and make the lowercase letter p craft a few days later to review the letter shape and sound.

Extension Activities for Penguins
Learning in themes is so much fun! If you have extra time this week, consider completing a few of these extra penguin activities for other subjects in your preschool. Each time you complete an activity, be sure to show your child the letter P in whatever you are doing, and emphasize the letter sound a few times just to review.
Literature
Read picture books about penguins! We have a fantastic list of letter p picture books you can read aloud to your child including penguin picture books. As you read each book, point to the letter P on the front cover and emphasize the letter sound when it occurs at the beginning of a word.
Science
Study the science of penguins. I recommend reading Penguins by Gail Gibbons for a non-fiction science read-aloud. I also love the Penguin Chick: Read and Find Out About Science book. This would also be a great week to visit a zoo or animal park with penguins!
Math
Penguin counters are a fun way to play with penguins while doing math lessons. This Penguins On Ice set is really cool and includes instructions for several different math activities besides counting. You might also like this Counting Penguins printable.
Physical Activity
Have you tried kid’s yoga? My kids love yoga exercises and these Penguin Yoga exercises are a perfect way to warm up the body and the brain before learning.
Snack Time
I know it’s not technically a learning activity per se, but your little one will have so much fun making and eating this adorable penguin snack. Making the snack will give your child a chance to practice fine motor skills, thinking skills, and kitchen skills!
Getting Ready for Craft Time
Before you call your child to the table, pull out your construction paper, glue stick, kids scissors and a googly eye. I really love self-adhesive googly eyes for ease of use! If your student isn’t quite ready for regular kids scissors, try loop scissors. Get everything to the table so that you won’t have to leave the kiddos hanging while you go gather supplies. I don’t know how many times I’ve forgotten to pull out what I needed ahead of time! Getting ready ahead of time prevents unecessary frustration for little children.
Introducing the Uppercase Letter P Craft
Choose one of the above activities to do right before your craft time to introduce the letter P and penguins. If you want a different approach, you could try one of these activities.
- Use plastic penguins at the craft table to talk about the letter P.
- Look for items around your home that begin with the letter P.
- Brainstorm together and List action words that begin with P. Examples to get you started include play, practice, and pry.
Materials for the Uppercase Letter P Craft
- black construction paper
- orange construction paper
- white construction paper
- construction paper for the background (color of choice)
- one googly eye
- glue
- scissors
- alternative – white paper and crayons
Instructions for the Uppercase Letter P Craft
- Draw the cut files as shown with a thick marker. Then have your student follow these instructions.
- Cut out a large uppercase P from the black paper.
- Next, cut out a triangle for a beak and 2 feet from the orange paper.
- Then cut out a semi-circle from the white paper for the Penguin’s tummy.
- Next, glue down the uppercase P in the middle of the backing paper.
- Then glue down the beak on the far right of the P.
- Next, glue down the tummy along the right side of the stem of the P.
- Then glue down the 2 orange feet at the bottom of the penguin.
- Finally, glue down the googly eye towards the top right of the P.
