A Top coat is a polish used as a last layer for a manicure routine. It is generally transparent and applies on top of the colored polish coats. This final step adds a layer of protection to your look and helps your manicure resist chipping, smudging and budging.

You should use topcoat nail polish to finish your manicure or pedicure. Make sure you apply a thin layer to each nail with three strokes, one in the middle and two to the outside. Seal off the free edge or nail tip to avoid chips or peels to help make your nail polish last longer.

The Top Coat provides the seal for your gel manicure, and helps greatly in preventing chips and cracks to your newly manicured nails. Simply apply at the end of your gel manicure to all nails, capping the ends and avoiding your cuticles, and cure for 60 seconds under your Bluesky Nail Lamp (LED).

Tip: On average, we can say 20 minutes is a “safe surface” dry. However, most brands of regular nail polish take about 1 hour to completely dry. In summary: The first layer of the base coat will take up to 2 minutes to dry.

A quick-dry top coat works well in protecting your polish and can reduce overall finishing time. While quick-dry products offer some benefit in reducing dry time, the difference between them and "regular" polishes is not dramatic.

If you find your nail polish sliding off too quickly or chipping of soon, then you might want to try to add a topcoat to make your nail polish stay on your nails for quite a while. You should only need one coat (ideally, three strokes) making sure to spread it entirely on your nails, especially on the side and the tip.

Ultimately, nothing bad will happen to your nail if you interchange the two, but your overall polish won't last as long and may not look as good. After the gel top coat is applied, cure your nails under your UV/LED one last time, for at least a minute, so that they the nails are perfectly dried and sealed. Sometimes gel will leave a tacky residue after curing, which you can simply wipe off with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol. Then you're good to go!

If you have a gel manicure, you can paint straight over it with regular nail polish. Gel nail polish stays wet until it is hardened by UV/LED light and won't be affected by using regular nail polish, which dries over time when exposed to air.

In general, it takes nail polish up to 2 hours to fully cure, but you can usually resume using your hands—cautiously—as soon as 15 minutes after the last application.

Plug in a hairdryer with a “cool air” setting before you start painting your nails. Once you're finished putting on polish, hit your nails with a steady stream of cool air. This works best if you paint the nails on just one hand, use the hairdryer, and then repeat the process for your other hand.

It may take 5 to 20 minutes for your nails to dry completely.
