In another lifetime I owned an herbal gift shop and we used to sell this fancy brand of mustard that came in all kinds of fancy flavors. I tried to recreate one of the spicy ones today.

I had made some keto pretzel sticks yesterday and thought this keto hot pepper mustard would be a great dip or condiment for them. It came out so good I had a hard time stopping!

With the abundance of peppers from our garden and a few other seasonings I came up with an easy and delicious keto condiment spread that you can use as a dip, spread, or even use in my low carb recipes. To keep it low carb I used sweetener and eliminated any flour.

Recipe ingredients I used.

The base of this spicy hot mustard is regular yellow prepared mustard and then I added sautéed hot peppers, onions, garlic as well as mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, sweetener and olive oil.

The type of hot peppers I used were both the red Serranos and green jalapenos pictured below for flecks of color as well as heat.. You can use any hot pepper you like the taste of. I liked the combination of colors and the amount of heat from these two particular varieties and that is what we have in our garden.

Other types you could use are hot banana peppers, poblanos, habaneros, etc. If you don’t want too much heat you can use sweet bell peppers and then add a little hot pepper flakes, ground cayenne or even hot sauce for additional heat.

I also used a packet of Splenda Sweetener for the added sweetness. You can use any kind of sweetener you want. If you don’t care about carbs you can try white granulated sugar, honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, etc. You are not using much but the added sweetness goes well with the other flavors.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, add the yellow mustard, mayonnaise, sweetener, onion powder, garlic powder. Mix well. Once the veggies have cooled add them to the mustard mixture. Refrigerate for a bit to let the flavors meld.

Step 3: Store mustard in a small mason jar or airtight container. It should keep for a few weeks when stored in the refrigerator. (Please scroll down to view the printable recipe card.)

Note that this recipe makes just a small batch of mustard. If you want to do some hot water bath canning, you could but would have to make substantially more of this recipe.

Well this was a quick and simple condiment recipe for you today but my family and I really liked it and wanted to share it with you. The combination of peppers, tangy yellow mustard and spices made this a great dip for my keto pretzels.

It would also make a great homemade Christmas or birthday gift for someone on a keto diet. Sometimes you can just doctor up regular kitchen staples to make it a bit more special. I hope you like it as much as I did.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

This easy hot pepper mustard recipe is a tasty low carb condiment that you can use as a dip or spread or use it in your cooking for added flavor and spice. The flavorful ingredients turn ordinary yellow mustard into extraordinary.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 2 hot peppers, (I used 1 jalapeno and 1 Serrano)
  • ¼ cup yellow onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • ½ cup yellow mustard
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ teaspoon Splenda Sweetener
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. When cleaning the peppers keep in mind that the heat is in the seeds and ribs. I cleaned out the seeds but kept the ribs. If you want more heat you can keep the seeds.
  2. Add the cleaned peppers, onion and garlic to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped and minced.
  3. Get out a small skillet and heat to medium high heat. Add the oil, peppers, onion and garlic mixture and turn the heat down to medium heat. Saute for about 5 minutes until the mixture has cooked and browned a bit. You want the onions to caramelize if you can. Take off the heat and let cool.
  4. In the meantime add the yellow mustard to a medium mixing bowl along with the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Once the pepper mixture has cooled a bit, add it as well and mix to combine.
  5. Store in a jar or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a few weeks.

Note I used a serrano and jalapeno pepper for extra color as well as heat but you can use any kind of hot pepper you want like hot or sweet banana peppers, habaneros, poblanos, etc.

If you don't want much heat, try sweet bell peppers and control the heat by adding hot sauce, cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.

I used Splenda sweetener but you can use any kind of sweetener - even regular white sugar, brown sugar, honey or maple syrup.
