In February 2024, we stand at a pivotal intersection of history and celebration as the United States and Canada observe Black History Month, and the United Kingdom commemorates LGBT+ History Month. This year’s themes – “African Americans and the Arts” in the USA, “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build” in Canada, and “Medicine –#UnderTheScope” in the UK – represent more than just annual observances; they are vibrant calls for reflection, recognition, and continuous action. They invite us to honour our shared past, engage with the present, and actively shape a more equitable future.#LGBTHistoryMonth#BlackHistoryMonthhttps://lnkd.in/gnNqngRs

The sit-ins and Freedom Rides of 1960-1961 are not merely historical events; they are enduring symbols of the fight for racial justice. As we reflect on their impact, we are inspired by their example to continue the struggle for a more equitable and just society. Their legacy challenges us to uphold the ideals of equality and to remain steadfast in the face of injustice.#blackhistorymonth#BHM#racialjusticehttps://lnkd.in/dJKWfKXZ

Runcorn, an industrial town on the Mersey estuary (and my hometown) is a strange place for someone born into slavery to end their days, yet this is where a lady called Susan Jane Woodier sadly died in a tiny, terraced house underneath the huge arches of the Mersey rail bridge in 1892. #slavery #runcorn #Liverpool #merseyside https://lnkd.in/g_EVxvkm

Instead of consigning the recognition of Black histories to one single month, Deborah Husbands, Stephen Bunbury and Dibyesh Anand advocate for a Black History Year.#BlackHistoryMonth– February in the US, October in the UK – is the one time of year that Black people’s histories are featured. Yet, cramming a deluge of talks and cultural activities into a single month creates a false sense of engagement – and as soon as the month is over, Black histories and cultures are often once again relegated to the background.#BeyondOctober#BH365https://lnkd.in/gq_YU-U9
